 CLIENTS COMMENTS

"Your guides were simply the best. We took the Machame Route and had a marvelous climb. All four of us made the summit with the help of your guides, cooks and porters. We could not have done it so easily without that support."

 MOUNT KILIMANJARO

Overview

Adventures Within Reach takes climbers up Kilimanjaro every day of the year. We can accommodate any of the routes.

Mount Kilimanjaro is located three degrees south of the equator in Northeastern Tanzania. It is the tallest mountain in Africa and is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. This immense mountain is made up of three volcanoes Shira, Mawenzi, and our goal, Kibo, the tallest one in the middle.

Of the famous highest seven peaks in the world, this is the easiest to get to and the easiest to climb. It requires no technical climbing experience, and any moderately fit person can summit the mountain.

A local guide is required to hike Kilimanjaro. Porters will also go on the trip to carry your luggage, food, and other equipment. You will only have to carry a day pack with your daily essentials.

Groups are limited to 5-7 people. We will combine groups up to this limit if they are starting the same route on the same day. However, we can also arrange for private groups at no extra cost. We will try to add single travelers to a group if at all possible, but we cannot guarantee it. We can accommodate large groups of any size.

¦¦ Routes

There are two main routes on the mountain: the Marangu and Machame. You may also want to consider the Rongai Route as it is far less traveled. None of these routes are technical. See our Route Comparison guide.

For groups of 1-3 people wanting to do a trek and safari with a group, our set departure packages offer these services at better prices.

The Marangu Route, also called the Coca-Cola Route, is the most popular. It takes a minimum of 5 days to complete, and climbers stay in huts with simple beds. This is the only route where you sleep in huts -- on all other routes, you sleep in tents.

The second most popular route is the Machame Route, also called the Whiskey Route. This route is a minimum of 6 days with longer hiking distances and a steeper summit ascent than the Marangu Route. There are no sleeping huts, so climbers sleep in tents. This route is more beautiful, and a higher percentage of climbers summit.

The Rongai Route is as easy and is more scenic than the Marangu Route. It starts on the north side of the mountain, and you descend down the Marangu Route on the south side of the mountain. This is a drier route with little rainforest (or mud) on the first day. This is typically a 6-day trek, and you sleep in tents.

Adventures Within Reach also offers the Shira Route, the Umbwe Route, and the longer Lemosho Route (8 days).

NOTE: Due to rock falls on the Western Breach (Arrow Glacier) Route, the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority (KINAPA) has closed this route as of January 5, 2006 until further notice. This affects the Western Breach and Crater Camp routes. All other routes (Machame, Marangu, Rongai, Lemosho, Shira) are still open as usual.
